Scholarships

Erasmus Mundus scholarships for JANUS are full scholarships designed to make the programme financially accessible to outstanding candidates.

What’s Covered?
The scholarships participation costs (including tuition fees and mandatory academic charges), provide monthly financial support for sundry expenses over the whole duration of the two‑year master (24 months).
The Financial Aid cover typical living expenses in the different host countries of the consortium (accommodation, daily costs, local transport, etc.) while students complete their academic and mobility requirements.

What is the amount of the scholarship?
Each JANUS Erasmus Mundus scholarship provides a monthly allowance of €1,400 for 24 months, for a total of €33,600 over the full length of the programme.
Tuition and other participation costs are financed separately within the overall grant, so scholarship holders do not pay programme fees directly.

Who can receive a scholarship and for how long?
Scholarships are open to academically excellent students from all countries who are admitted to the JANUS programme, and are awarded on the basis of academic excellence, the quality and coherence of the application, and the overall merit of the candidate’s profile.
Students who have already benefited from a previous Erasmus Mundus Joint Master (EMJM) scholarship are not eligible to receive another EMJM scholarship.
Tailored Support for Individual Needs
Contributions to Individual Needs
Two dedicated Erasmus Mundus “individual needs” scholarships are available in JANUS, each with a maximum budget of €60,000 to support students with disabilities or long‑term health conditions. This funding is reserved for enrolled students (with or without an Erasmus Mundus scholarship) who have long‑term physical, mental, intellectual or sensory impairments that make special adaptations necessary to participate fully in the programme.

Contributions to individual needs must comply with the general eligibility conditions of the EMJM grant agreement and can be used, for example, to finance assistance by a third person, adaptation of the study or work environment (equipment, software, accessibility measures), or additional travel and transportation costs linked to the student’s disability. The support takes the form of unit costs, with predefined amounts ranging from €3,000 up to €60,000 per student, depending on the level and type of support required, and complements the standard Erasmus Mundus scholarship or self‑funding arrangements
Special Funding for Global Scholars
Targeted funding for global scholars
A share of the scholarships is linked to geographic priorities, encouraging applications from talented students in non‑EU countries across several world regions. This reflects the strategic ambition of JANUS to build a truly global cohort in the field of security and defence and to foster diverse perspectives in the classroom.
Geographical objectives and the indicative budget share set for this initiative are as follows:
- Region 3 (Southern Neighborhood)
- Region 5 (Asia)
- Region 9 (Sub-Saharan Africa)
Self-Financed Students
Not all admitted students will receive an Erasmus Mundus scholarship, but JANUS also welcomes highly motivated self‑funded candidates.
- A self‑funded student is able to cover both tuition fees and living costs during the 24 months of the programme (in Europe and in Lebanon, depending on the mobility track).
- Financial resources may come from the student, their family, employers, or external sponsors (public or private).
- Admitted self‑funded students follow exactly the same academic path and benefit from the same teaching, supervision and mobility opportunities as scholarship holders.
If you are considering the self‑funding option, you can consult the dedicated “Self‑funding” section of the website for detailed information on estimated costs and possible complementary support (such as Erasmus+ loans or national schemes, where applicable).
