Academic Background

Applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree and at least 3 years of higher education (equivalent to at least 180 ECTS for European graduates).

Relevant Degree

​Applicants must hold a relevant degree in Law, Political Science, International Relations, Economics, History, Security/Defense or a related field.

Language Proficiency

Applicants must demonstrate sufficient proficiency in both official languages of the Master’s program.

Valid Passport

Applicants must have a passport that is valid for at least one year.

Application steps: secure your spot in the program

  3. Submit your complete application online before the deadline.

Required supporting documents :

  • Copy of ID or passport valid for at least one year (please include a checkbox for applicants with dual nationality)
  • Diplomas and official translation into English: Applicants must hold (or must be in the process of obtaining) a Bachelor’s degree, with a minimum of 180 ECTS, in International Relations, Law, Political Science, European Studies, Security/Defense, or a related field.
  • Transcript and official translation into English
  • English language certificate: A minimum score of 90 points is required for the TOEFL, 6.5 for the IELTS, or an equivalent test (Please note that a TOEFL score of 100 points is required for applicants who choose the UK for the 3rd semester)
  • French language certificate: B2 level required
  • Spanish language certificate: B2 level required (only required if the applicant chooses Spain for the 3rd semester)
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV) written in English
  • Essay of 3 pages: 3 questions to answer, two in English and one in French, with a limit of 400 words per question:
    • Why did you choose this program?
    • Describe a current challenge or issue that the European Union is facing in terms of security and defense.
    • What is the difference between security and defense?

Selection process: how we choose the top candidates

 

The Selection Committee will study applications received.

Phase 1: Verification and Administrative Validation

  • All applications will be reviewed to ensure they meet the required administrative criteria.

Phase 2: Evaluation of Applications

  • Minimum score: 70/100 points
    • Essay (3 pages): worth 40 points
    • Letters of Recommendation: worth 10 points
    • Transcripts: worth 50 points

Phase 3: Interview with Shortlisted Applicants

: 200 to 300 applicants

  • Evaluation Criteria (Total 100 points):
    • Proficiency in English and French
    • Motivation for Participating in the Program
    • Knowledge of the field and the program
    • Career project, personal professional experience, commitment, volunteering

Phase 4: Final Selection

  • Final Score Calculation:
    • 50% of the Application Score
    • 50% of the Interview Score
  • Final Selection: 30 applicants will be selected by merit. 20 applicants will be awarded an EMJM scholarship and 10 others will be admitted without a scholarship.
  • Waiting List: 80 applicants will be ranked by merit.

Student scholarship details

  • Students who have already received a EMJMD scholarship cannot apply for another EMJM scholarship.
  • The scholarship is awarded for the entire duration of the master’s program which is 24 months. Scholarship holders will receive 1,400 euros per month.
  • The scholarship covers for tuition fees of the program, living and travel expenses, including visa fees.
  • A limited number of scholarships are available for students of all nationalities.
  • There are no separate applications for the scholarships. All applicants for the program are automatically considered for scholarship opportunities. Scholarships are awarded based on merit and excellence, using the same applications submitted for the program.

Costs and fees (for students)

  • It is possible for admitted students to enroll in the master’s program at their own expense. Tuition fees consist of 9,000 euros per year, which brings the total cost of the master’s program to 18,000 euros.

Living and travel expenses  

  • Students who are not awarded the EMJM scholarships should bear their own living and travel expenses.
